Fairy rings have a rich folkloric background. In Europe, they’ve been
called elf rings, witches rings and sorcerer’s rings. Their tendency to
occur in woodland areas have linked them with supernatural stories of
fairies and other elusive creatures.
It is well known, for example, that if a tree is turned upside down, with its roots in the air and its boughs and branches planted in the ground, the former will sprout leaves, buds and flowers, and the latter will become roots.
